Monocacy Cemetery Grave Marking

Photos from the William Smallwood Chapter Website.

Compatriots and Friends,

These photos were taken earlier today by a photographer from the Montgomery County Gazette newspaper and shows Michael A. Saunders, president of the General William Smallwood Chapter of the S.A.R., honoring the Patriots from the Revolutionary War who are buried in the historic Monocacy Cemetery in Beallsville, Maryland, and me placing a wreath at the grave of Pvt. Jonathan Beall Benson, a soldier who served in the War of 1812.  It also shows Compatriots Dave Embrey and Bill Smithson  - in period uniforms - firing musket salutes at both ceremonies.

Included in the attendance were members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Maryland Society Daughters of 1812, the General William Smallwood and Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapters of the S.A.R., descendants of the Talbott Patriot buried in the Monocacy Cemetery, directors of the Monocacy Cemetery, and members of the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Maryland.

The two events were organized with the assistance of Glenn Wallace, a director of the Monocacy Cemetery, who has researched and documented those interred in this very historic resting place.  You can learn more about Glenn’s work and the cemetery at
